Opposition trumps govt in Senate chairman, deputy chairman elections

ISLAMABAD: Opposition alliance in the Senate on Monday defeated the government alliance for the elections of Senate chairman and deputy chairman.

According to details, 103 votes were cast in secret balloting. The opposition candidate Sadiq Sanjrani secured 57 votes while the government alliance candidate Raja Zafarul Haq could only bag 46 votes.

Senator Yaqoob Khan Nasir took the oath from the newly elected Senate Chairman after which Sanjrani assumed the office immediately.

After the results, election for the deputy chairman was held in which the government had nominated Usman Kakar as its candidate while Saleem Mandviwala was nominated by the opposition. Mandviwala won the election getting 54 votes while Usman Kakar could only secure 44 votes.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) senators did not take part in the deputy chairman election. Sadiq Sanjrani was supported by Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, FATA members and MQM.
