ISLAMABAD: Female Hindu Senator from Sindh Krishna Kumari on Monday took oath wearing the traditional dress of Thar and remained the centre of attention throughout the day. Kumari was wearing white bangles. She had been nominated for the Senate by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Krishna Kumari came to the Senate along with her parents. Talking to media on the occasion, Kumari said that she was feeling very proud. She promised to do her most in order to bring her community forward.
“We have been given representation for the first time in Pakistan’s history. Now I will be able to work more for the women of my area”, Kumari said. She also thanked PPP for the Senate ticket on this occasion.
Krishna Kumari’s story is an inspiring one. She spent most of her childhood in sheer poverty and even spent some years in a private jail of a Sindhi feudal lord. However, she continued her study despite all the hardships. She was in 9th standard when she got married.
But she continued her study and eventually obtained a Masters degree in Sociology from Sindh University. At the same time, she continued her welfare and philanthropic work in Thar and the adjacent areas.
Krishna Kumari Kolhi eventually rose to the position of senator and this truly marks a huge day in Pakistan’s parliamentary history.
