BEIRUT: (Christian Times) – A Lebanese Christian judge, unlike Pakistan and other countries where blasphemy is punishable by death, ordered three Muslim youths who had blasphemed about Mother Mary to study Koran’s Surah al-Imran and learn it by heart.
Creating a new example, the female judge instead of sentencing the boys to jail ordered them to learn a chapter of Koran that discusses Mary and Jesus’ virgin birth.
The decision is being looked at positively throughout the world and has been appreciated by Prime Minister Saad Hariri and former premier Najib Maikati.
The idea behind the decision was to make the youths learn tolerance for Christianity from the holy book of Islam. She added in her decision that law did not only mean to punish people but to educate them as well. She said that the youths would not be released unless they learn the chapter by heart.
It is pertinent to mention here that al-Imran’s verses from 33 to 59 specifically discuss mother Mary and Jesus.
