Christians should be given the right to choose reps directly: Saleem Khursheed Khokhar
LIVERPOOL: (Christian Times) – Former member of the assembly and the founder of Minorities Revolution Party Saleem Khursheed Khokhar on Sunday said that the government of Pakistan had once again failed to realise the hopes of Pakistani minorities. He demanded from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and the other opposition parties to allow the minorities their right to directly elect their representatives.
Khokhar said that the minorities in Pakistan had the right to directly elect their leaders till 1999 but the former President Pervez Musharraf introduced a new reform as soon as he came to power. He said that the minorities had always suffered from discrimination ever since the passing of this reform because the so-called reform was not in line with the democratic norms.
He said that there were 98 constituencies with significant minority population in Pakistan while at 23 they could actually win the seats even. The Christian leader said that direct election of the representatives was the only solution to the problem because the current system had failed to allay the concerns of the minorities.
